Potential value

$400 if your direct deposits total $5,000 or more in 25 days, plus a temporary 1.10% APY boost on savings

Best for

people who can point a paycheck at a new bank for about a month and want a no-fee account afterward

TL;DR

  • SoFi pays a Direct Deposit Bonus of $50 or $400, based on how much Eligible Direct Deposit lands in the account in the 25 calendar days after your first one.
  • $1,000 to $4,999.99 in eligible direct deposits earns $50. $5,000 or more earns $400. Under $1,000 earns nothing.
  • SoFi says the bonus posts within 7 business days of meeting the requirements, and your first eligible direct deposit must arrive on or before 12/31/27.
  • New members can also get a 1.10% APY Boost for up to six months, on top of the 3.30% APY savings rate for members with direct deposit (rates current as of 10/20/2026).
  • Transfers from another bank, Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo don’t count for the bonus. It needs real payroll, pension, or government benefit deposits.

Every SoFi detail below was checked November 5, 2026 on SoFi’s banking page and bonus terms and the SoFi Bank rate sheet (rates effective October 20, 2026). If we couldn’t confirm something on an official SoFi page that day, we left it out.

Who is eligible

SoFi’s terms say the bonus is for new and existing SoFi members who have never set up direct deposit with SoFi. A few other rules matter:

  • It’s limited to one bonus per SoFi member.
  • On a joint account, only the primary account holder’s direct deposit activity counts, and the primary holder is whoever opened the joint account first.
  • Your SoFi Checking account must be open and in good standing when the bonus pays.
  • SoFi can exclude members for suspected fraud, misuse, or suspicious activity.

That first rule is friendlier than many big-bank bonuses. If you’re already a SoFi member but have never set up direct deposit with SoFi, the terms say you can still qualify, because the test is direct deposit history, not whether you’ve ever been a customer.

How the $400 bonus works, step by step

  1. Open SoFi Checking and Savings. Account opening is subject to approval.
  2. Set up your first Eligible Direct Deposit. SoFi must receive it on or before 12/31/27.
  3. Get at least $5,000 in eligible direct deposits within 25 calendar days of that first deposit. SoFi adds up everything eligible that arrives in that window, starting with the first deposit of $1 or more.
  4. Wait up to 7 business days. SoFi says the bonus lands in your SoFi Checking account within 7 business days of completing the requirements.

You only get one bonus amount. If your 25-day total is $4,800, you get $50, not $400, and you can’t top it up later.

Can you hit $5,000 in 25 days?

This is the part to plan before you open. Some quick, illustrative math (not a quote of anyone’s pay):

  • If you’re paid every two weeks, two or three paychecks can land in a 25-day window depending on timing. Two paychecks would need to be $2,500 each after taxes and deductions to reach $5,000.
  • If you’re paid twice a month, you’ll likely get two deposits in the window.
  • If you’re paid monthly, you’ll likely get one, so a single deposit would need to be $5,000 or more.

Many payroll systems let you send all or part of your paycheck to a new account. Moving the whole paycheck for one cycle or two is the easiest way to reach the $400 tier. Check how long your employer takes to switch direct deposit, since the 25-day clock starts with the first eligible deposit, not the day you open the account.

What counts as direct deposit

SoFi’s terms define an Eligible Direct Deposit as a recurring ACH deposit of regular income, including payroll, pension, or government benefit payments (such as Social Security) from your employer, payroll or benefits provider, or a government agency.

SoFi specifically says these don’t count:

  • Check deposits
  • Peer-to-peer transfers such as Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, and Wise
  • Merchant transactions from PayPal, Stripe, Square, and similar
  • Bank ACH transfers and wire transfers from external accounts
  • IRS tax refunds

SoFi also says it decides eligibility “in its sole discretion” and may ask for documentation. If you met the requirement but no bonus showed up, SoFi’s terms say to call 855-456-7634 with the details of your first eligible direct deposit.

You’ll see forums argue that certain bank transfers get coded as direct deposit. For this bonus, SoFi’s own list rules out bank ACH transfers, so plan on a real paycheck or benefit payment.

The 1.10% APY Boost and savings rates

SoFi’s savings rate depends on your activity. Per the rate sheet effective October 20, 2026:

Member typeSavings APYChecking APY
With Eligible Direct Deposit or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits every 31 days3.30%0.50%
Without either (and not a SoFi Plus member)0.80%0.50%
SoFi Plus members (paid subscription)4.70% on the first $20,000, 3.30% above that0.50%

Rates are variable and can change at any time.

On top of that, new SoFi Checking and Savings members can earn a 1.10% APY Boost on one savings account for up to six months. SoFi says that brings the total to up to 4.40% APY with the current 3.30% rate. To qualify:

  1. Open your first SoFi Checking and Savings account between 10/20/2026 and 12/31/2027.
  2. Within 60 days, either receive an Eligible Direct Deposit or receive $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits.
  3. Keep that up every 31 days to keep the boost.

Unlike the cash bonus, the APY boost can be earned with $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits, and those include ACH transfers, inbound wires, peer-to-peer transfers, check deposits, and cash deposits. So the boost has a no-paycheck path, but the $400 bonus does not. The boost can’t be combined with other promotional rates or added to SoFi Plus balances earning 4.70%.

Fees and account features

SoFi says it doesn’t charge account, service, or maintenance fees for SoFi Checking and Savings. It does charge transaction fees for outgoing wire transfers, Instant Transfers, and global remittance transfers, per its fee policy.

Other features listed on SoFi’s banking page:

  • No-fee ATMs at 55,000+ Allpoint network ATMs (out-of-network ATMs may charge their own fees)
  • Early paycheck access, typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, depending on when SoFi gets notice of the payment
  • Overdraft Coverage of up to $50 on debit card purchases for members with $1,000+ in eligible direct deposits in a rolling 31-day period
  • FDIC insurance through SoFi Bank, N.A., with coverage of up to $3M through the optional SoFi Insured Deposit Program

That no-monthly-fee setup is the biggest difference from many big-bank offers. At a bank with a monthly fee, moving your paycheck back after the bonus can trigger charges. At SoFi, per its fee policy, the account doesn’t carry a maintenance fee.

Gotchas to watch

  • The tiers are strict. $4,999.99 earns $50, not $400. If you’re close, send a little more of your pay to SoFi during the window.
  • The 25-day clock starts at your first eligible deposit of $1 or more. A small test deposit from payroll can start it early, so time your switch.
  • Bank transfers won’t count toward the bonus, even large ones.
  • Taxes. SoFi says bonuses are miscellaneous income and may be reported on Form 1099-MISC (or 1042-S).
  • Only once. If you’ve ever set up direct deposit with SoFi, you’re out.
  • SoFi can change or end the promotion at any time without notice. The numbers here are SoFi’s public terms on November 5, 2026.

Is the SoFi bonus worth it?

Yes, if your paychecks can reach $5,000 within 25 days. The $400 tier is a strong payout for a no-fee account, and there’s no balance you have to park for months.

The $50 tier is only worth it if you wanted a SoFi account anyway, for example for the savings rate or the no-fee setup.

Skip it if you’ve already used direct deposit with SoFi, you can’t redirect a paycheck, or your take-home pay can’t get near $1,000 in the window.
