Best for

renters who want rewards on their biggest monthly bill without paying a card fee to do it

Rent is the biggest bill most renters pay, and for years it earned nothing. The usual problem is the fee: when a landlord or payment portal takes cards at all, it often adds a card surcharge that wipes out any rewards.

In 2026 the short answer is still Bilt. All three Bilt cards earn points on rent and mortgage payments made through Bilt with no transaction fee. The longer answer depends on how much else you put on the card, because Bilt now ties your rent points to your everyday spending.

Every card fact below was checked October 18, 2026 on Bilt’s card page, the Bilt Card Offer Terms, the Bilt Cash Program Terms, Bilt’s support article on earning without a Bilt Alliance property, the Wells Fargo Active Cash page, and the Citi Double Cash page. How Bilt gets around landlord card fees

Bilt’s card FAQ says that when you pay through Bilt as a cardholder, you can bypass your landlord’s credit card fees. Bilt can send the payment by ACH (it gives you an account and routing number to enter in your landlord’s portal), through Venmo, or as a mailed check. The money is debited from your linked bank account, and your landlord receives a normal payment.

Three rules from the Card Offer Terms to know up front:

  • To earn points on housing, your card account must be in good standing, you need a bank account connected to Bilt, and the payment must go through the Bilt app or website.
  • There is no monthly or annual cap on housing points under the default option.
  • Bilt’s FAQ says the old 5-transactions-a-month rule from the original Bilt card does not apply to the current Bilt cards.

Rent points depend on your everyday spending

This is the part that changed with the current Bilt cards. You choose one of two rewards options for your whole account.

Housing-only option (the default). Your rent multiplier depends on your everyday spending on the card in the same billing cycle, compared with your rent:

Everyday spend vs rentPoints on rentExample with $2,000 rent
Under 25%250-point floor250 points
At least 25%0.5X$500 spend earns 1,000 points
At least 50%0.75X$1,000 spend earns 1,500 points
At least 75%1X$1,500 spend earns 2,000 points
100% or more1.25X$2,000 spend earns 2,500 points

Rent itself does not count as everyday spend. Points on rent post after your statement closes.

Flexible Bilt Cash option. You earn 4% Bilt Cash on everyday spending instead of the tiered multiplier, then redeem Bilt Cash to unlock rent points: $3 of Bilt Cash unlocks 100 points, up to 1 point per dollar of rent. There is no 250-point floor and no 1.25X tier under this option.

What this means for picking a card: every Bilt card earns the same rent points for the same spending ratio. A $0 Blue and a $495 Palladium both earn 2,500 points on $2,000 rent when you also put $2,000 of everyday spending on the card. The fee buys better earning on the everyday spending itself, plus credits. Our Bilt Blue vs Obsidian vs Palladium comparison runs that math tier by tier.

Watch Out

If your everyday spending lives on other cards, a Bilt card earns only the 250-point floor on rent under the default option. A Bilt card is the best rent card only if it is also one of your everyday cards.

Bilt Blue: best no-fee card for rent

  • Annual fee: $0.
  • Welcome bonus: $100 Bilt Cash at account opening.
  • Rent and mortgage: up to 1.25X, no transaction fee.
  • Everyday earning: 1X on other purchases, 3X on Lyft after linking accounts, 3X hotels and 2X flights on the Bilt Travel portal, and up to 4X at Bilt partner restaurants.
  • Intro APR: Bilt lists 10% on new eligible purchases for 12 billing cycles after account opening on all three cards, then a variable 26.74% to 34.74%. Paying in full is still the way to come out ahead.

Best for: renters who want rent points without an annual fee, and anyone testing how Bilt’s spend-ratio tiers fit their budget.

Bilt Obsidian: rent plus dining or groceries

  • Annual fee: $95 (plus $50 per authorized user, per the Card Offer Terms).
  • Welcome bonus: $200 Bilt Cash at account opening.
  • Everyday earning: 3X on dining or grocery, your choice (grocery capped at $25,000 a year, then 1X), 2X other travel, 4X hotels and 3X flights on Bilt Travel, up to 6X at Bilt partner restaurants.
  • Credit: $100 Bilt Travel hotel credit, as $50 from January through June and $50 from July through December, on hotel bookings of 2 nights or more through the Bilt Travel portal.

Dining is the default category. You can switch to grocery once within 30 days of opening the account; after that, the choice is locked for the rest of the calendar year.

Best for: renters who spend real money on restaurants or groceries every month, since that same spending also pushes up the rent multiplier.

Bilt Palladium: rent plus heavy everyday spending

  • Annual fee: $495 (plus $95 per authorized user).
  • Welcome bonus: $300 Bilt Cash at account opening, plus 50,000 Bilt Points and Gold status after $4,000 of everyday spending (not rent or mortgage) within 90 days.
  • Everyday earning: 2X on everyday purchases, 4X on Lyft after linking, 4X hotels and 3X flights on Bilt Travel, up to 5X at Bilt partner restaurants.
  • Credits: $400 Bilt Travel hotel credit ($200 per half-year, 2-night minimum), $200 Bilt Cash each year (at account opening, then every January 1), and Priority Pass membership.

Best for: renters with high everyday spending who will use the hotel credit. Because Bilt allows one welcome bonus per person on its current cards, pick Palladium on day one if you are sure you want it.

No Bilt card? You can still earn Bilt Points on rent

Per Bilt’s support article (checked October 18, 2026), you can link any debit or credit card to a Bilt account:

  • Third-party credit cards earn 1 Bilt Point per $2 spent.
  • A debit card or linked bank account earns 250 Bilt Points when you use your BillPay account to submit monthly rent payments.

That 250 points a month is small, but it costs nothing. Before you pay rent through Bilt with a non-Bilt credit card, check the price Bilt shows at checkout; only Bilt cardholders get the no-transaction-fee promise in the Card Offer Terms.

When a 2% card makes sense for rent

If your landlord takes cards directly, the math is simple: a card only wins if its rewards rate beats the fee. Two $0-annual-fee flat-rate cards, from their issuers’ pages (checked October 18, 2026):

  • Wells Fargo Active Cash: unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases, $0 annual fee, and a $100 cash rewards bonus after $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.
  • Citi Double Cash: 2% cash back on purchases (1% when you buy, 1% as you pay), $0 annual fee, and a $200 cash back bonus after $1,500 in purchases in the first 6 months. Citi pays its cash back as ThankYou Points.

Illustrative fee math (not a quote from any landlord):

Card fee on $2,000 rentFee2% backNet per month
0% (no surcharge)$0$40+$40
1%$20$40+$20
2%$40$40$0
3%$60$40-$20

Two cautions. First, ask how the charge will post; Wells Fargo’s terms, for example, exclude cash equivalents and person-to-person transfers from earning rewards. Second, putting rent on a card to hit a welcome bonus only works if you pay the full balance. At a 24% APR, interest runs about 2% a month, enough to erase a 2% reward in a single billing cycle.

How to choose

  1. Can you pay rent through Bilt? Bilt can pay by ACH, Venmo, PayPal, or mailed check, so most landlords who accept one of those can be paid through Bilt. If yours can, a Bilt card is the default answer.
  2. Will the Bilt card also be an everyday card? If yes, pick the tier by your everyday spending (Blue for light, Obsidian for dining or groceries, Palladium for heavy all-around spending). If no, link a debit card to Bilt for the 250 points a month and keep your best everyday card.
  3. Does your landlord charge a card fee? Only use a non-Bilt card for rent when its rewards rate clearly beats that fee.

Checklist before you pay rent with a card

  1. Find out how your landlord accepts payments (portal, ACH, check, Venmo) and whether a card fee applies.
  2. Total your monthly everyday spending and divide by your rent to see which Bilt tier you would hit.
  3. Choose Housing-only or Flexible Bilt Cash within the first 7 days after opening; later changes take effect the next billing cycle.
  4. Connect a bank account to Bilt and make the payment in the Bilt app or website.
  5. Set a calendar reminder a few days before rent is due to allow for processing time.
  6. Pay the card statement in full every month.

FAQ

What is the best credit card for paying rent with no fee?

A Bilt card. Bilt Blue, Obsidian, and Palladium all earn up to 1.25X on rent paid through Bilt with no transaction fee. Blue does it with no annual fee.

Do all Bilt cards earn the same points on rent?

Yes. All three use the same spend-ratio tiers (0.5X to 1.25X) or the Bilt Cash unlock (up to 1X). The annual fee changes everyday earning and credits, not rent earning.

Can I earn points on rent without a Bilt card?

Yes. Bilt says third-party credit cards linked to Bilt earn 1 point per $2 spent, and paying rent from a debit card or linked bank account through BillPay earns 250 points a month.

Is paying rent with a regular credit card worth it?

Only when the card’s rewards beat the landlord’s fee. A 2% card breaks even at a 2% fee and loses money above it.

Does Bilt work for mortgages too?

Yes. Bilt’s FAQ says you can pay eligible residential mortgages through Bilt and earn on both rent and mortgage payments.

Bottom line

Bottom Line

For most renters the best card for paying rent is a Bilt card, because it earns up to 1.25X on rent with no transaction fee. Pick Blue if you want no annual fee, Obsidian if dining or groceries are a big monthly line item, and Palladium if you spend heavily and will use its credits. If a Bilt card will not be one of your everyday cards, link a debit card to Bilt for 250 points a month, and only put rent on a 2% card when the landlord’s fee is under 2%.

Once your rent is earning, our Bilt Rent Day explainer covers the monthly transfer bonuses that can stretch those points further.
