Best for
Washington-area travelers with Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi, or Bilt points who want economy or a lie-flat seat to Berlin
Berlin is one of the easier European capitals to reach on points from Washington, but there is a catch: as of today there is no nonstop flight from the DC area to Berlin Brandenburg (BER). That means almost every good award goes through one connection in Europe or North America, and the program you pick decides whether you pay a fair price or a pile of surcharges.
This guide compares the programs that matter for Dulles (IAD), Reagan National (DCA), and Baltimore/Washington (BWI) to BER in economy and business class. Every award price, fee, and transfer ratio below was checked October 13, 2026 on the program’s or issuer’s own site, with the source named next to it. Where a program prices awards dynamically, we say so and do not guess a number.
Is there a nonstop from DC to Berlin?
Not right now. United launched daily Dulles to Berlin flights on May 25, 2023, and Berlin Airport’s announcement described the route as seasonal, “until the end of the summer flight schedule.” For 2026, Berlin Airport’s summer 2026 schedule release (March 29 to October 24, 2026) lists these North American nonstops from BER, and Washington is not among them:
- United: daily to Newark/New York
- Delta: New York JFK, daily from May 1 to October 25
- Air Canada: Montreal, three to four times a week from July 3 to October 11
- Air Transat: Toronto, three times a week from May 3 to October 23
So plan on one stop. If United brings back Dulles to Berlin for a future summer, it would be the simplest award on this list, so check united.com when the summer schedule is published.
Route overview: where to connect
The great-circle distance from Dulles to Berlin is about 4,190 miles, so nearly every one-stop routing lands between 4,200 and 4,800 flown miles. That matters for Aeroplan, which prices partner awards by distance.
| Connection | Alliance | Approx. flown miles from IAD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt, Munich | Star Alliance (Lufthansa, United) | 4,340 to 4,540 | Short hop to BER |
| Zurich, Vienna, Brussels | Star Alliance (SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines) | 4,280 to 4,780 | Good Aeroplan and Turkish options |
| Newark | Star Alliance (United) | 4,200 | United’s daily BER flight |
| Montreal (summer only) | Star Alliance (Air Canada) | 4,230 from DCA | Air Canada’s seasonal BER flight, July 3 to October 11, 2026 |
| Istanbul | Star Alliance (Turkish Airlines) | 6,260 | Long detour; pushes Aeroplan into a higher band |
| Paris, Amsterdam | SkyTeam (Air France, KLM) | 4,230 to 4,380 | Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic |
| London, Dublin | oneworld and Aer Lingus | 4,220 to 4,270 | Avios; watch BA surcharges |
| Lisbon, Copenhagen, Reykjavik | Various | 4,290 to 5,020 | Check partner pricing case by case |
Mileage is our great-circle calculation and is only a guide. Aeroplan says points are “based on the actual distance flown between origin and destination.”
From DCA: Reagan National has no flights to Europe, so you start with a domestic or Canadian connection, for example to Newark or, in summer, Montreal. From BWI: check ba.com for British Airways service to London Heathrow, then connect to Berlin.
Watch Out
Transfers are one way. Find award space first, then transfer only what you need. Points sent to the wrong program cannot come back.
The comparison table
Prices are one way per person, checked October 13, 2026. “Dynamic” means the program does not publish a fixed price.

Citi note: Citi’s Strata Premier page lists Virgin Atlantic among its transfer partners, and Citi’s partner list includes Avianca, Flying Blue, and Turkish Airlines. Option 1: Air Canada Aeroplan (best all-around)
Aeroplan is the program to check first. It publishes a distance-based chart for partner awards, and Washington to Berlin on a one-stop Star Alliance routing falls in the 4,001 to 6,000 mile band of the North America to Atlantic zone chart:
| Distance flown | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 4,000 miles | 32,500 | 60,000 |
| 4,001 to 6,000 miles | 42,500 | 75,000 |
| 6,001 to 8,000 miles | 60,000 | 90,000 |
Those are the “All other partners” prices, so they apply to airlines like Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines. Air Canada and its “Select Partners,” which include United, are listed as “Starting at” the same 42,500 and 75,000 in this band, so those prices can go higher on busy dates. Aeroplan’s 2026 chart shows median prices of 46,600 in economy and 80,000 in business for that group. Aeroplan updated the chart on June 1, 2026, raising business in this band from 70,000 to 75,000, according to its chart update notice.
Routing via Istanbul adds enough distance (about 6,260 miles) to move you into the 6,001 to 8,000 band, so a Turkish connection costs 60,000 in economy or 90,000 in business on Aeroplan.
Fees. Aeroplan’s policy charges a CA$39 partner booking fee per ticket when any flight is operated by a partner. On its own flights, Air Canada says “we have eliminated additional airline surcharges.” Aeroplan also lists a U.S. Tax Recovery Fee on certain itineraries. Look at the cash total on the payment screen before you book.
Transfers. Chase, Amex, Capital One, and Bilt all move points to Aeroplan at 1:1.
Tip
In summer, Air Canada’s seasonal Montreal to Berlin nonstop (July 3 to October 11 in 2026, per Berlin Airport) gives Aeroplan members a one-stop option from DCA. Search Washington to Berlin on aircanada.com and look for the Montreal connection.
Option 2: Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
Turkish publishes a region-based chart for Star Alliance partner awards. From North America to Turkish’s “Europe 2” region, the partner chart shows 55,000 miles in economy and 90,000 in business one way. Turkish’s site blocked our browser on October 13, so these figures come from the search-indexed copy of that official page; confirm the region and price in your Miles&Smiles account before transferring.
Aeroplan is cheaper in both cabins on most routings, so Turkish is mainly useful when it shows partner space that Aeroplan does not, or when your points are in Capital One, Bilt, or Citi.
Option 3: Virgin Atlantic Flying Club on Air France
Virgin Atlantic publishes a zone chart for Air France flights. Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia are all in Zone 6 (East Coast North America), and Germany is in Zone 1. The long-haul prices shown on Virgin’s Air France page for Zone 6 to Zone 1 are:
- Economy: 12,000 points off-peak, 22,000 peak
- Business: 48,500 points off-peak, 58,500 peak
Those are the lowest points prices in this guide, but Virgin’s terms say mileage excludes “passenger taxes, duties, fee, charges and surcharges,” so expect a cash bill on top. Virgin also says Air France rewards can be booked “up to 300 days before departure” and only on Air France operated flights. Search Air France flights from Washington on Virgin’s site, and confirm how Virgin prices the Paris to Berlin connection on your itinerary before you transfer.
Option 4: Aer Lingus via Dublin (Avios)
Aer Lingus publishes its Avios prices by route. Its Avios chart lists Dublin to Washington in Zone 5:
- Economy: 13,000 Avios off-peak, 20,000 peak
- Business: 50,000 Avios off-peak, 60,000 peak
Dublin to Berlin is in Zone 2 at 6,500 Avios off-peak or 7,500 peak in economy. All prices are one way. Off-peak economy all the way to Berlin works out to 19,500 Avios plus taxes and carrier charges, which makes this one of the cheapest economy options when off-peak space is open. Chase, Amex, and Bilt transfer to Aer Lingus AerClub at 1:1.
Option 5: United MileagePlus
United does not publish an award chart; prices change by date and demand. United’s hub at Dulles and its daily Newark to Berlin flight make it the simplest program to search, and both Chase and Bilt transfer to United at 1:1. Compare United’s price with Aeroplan’s for the same flights, because Aeroplan can book United and other Star Alliance airlines at its chart rates.
Other programs worth a look
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue. Prices are dynamic. Flying Blue releases Promo Rewards “on the first day of each month” with discounts of up to 25%. The October 2026 list did not include Washington. Flying Blue’s terms say reward tickets “are subject to airport and security taxes and carrier surcharges.” Since September 2026, Air France and KLM rewards come in Light, Standard, and Flex fares, and the Promo price is the Light fare, which has no checked bag in economy.
- British Airways Avios. BA shows prices at booking rather than in a full public table. BA lists “carrier charges” alongside government taxes and fees on its own flights, so check the cash total on a London connection and compare it with Aer Lingus via Dublin.
- Avianca LifeMiles. A useful Star Alliance alternative to Aeroplan with no fixed chart we could verify on lifemiles.com. Compare its quote, including taxes and fees, with Aeroplan’s.
- Lufthansa Miles & More. On Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian and other group airlines, “the mileage amount varies for each flight,” and “taxes, fees and airline surcharges are displayed separately.” None of the five issuers here transfer to it, so book Lufthansa seats through Aeroplan or another partner instead.
Best picks
- Cheapest economy: Virgin Atlantic on Air France at 12,000 points off-peak, plus taxes and surcharges. Close behind: Aer Lingus via Dublin at 19,500 Avios off-peak.
- Best business-class value: Aeroplan at 75,000 points on Star Alliance partners, with a published fee structure of taxes plus CA$39. Virgin on Air France (48,500 off-peak) is fewer points but adds surcharges.
- Lowest fees: Aeroplan, especially on Air Canada flights, where Air Canada says it has eliminated airline surcharges.
- Easiest to search: United and Aeroplan. Both search Star Alliance partner space on their own sites, which covers the most one-stop routings from Dulles.
- Positioning tip: Berlin Airport’s summer 2026 schedule added Eurowings flights from BER to London (12 times a week) and Lisbon (up to three a week). If a cheap award lands you in London, Lisbon, Dublin, or Paris but not Berlin, a short paid flight can finish the trip. Book it on a separate ticket and leave a long buffer between flights.
How to search and book
- Start with aircanada.com. Search Washington to Berlin with “Book with points.” Aeroplan can book Air Canada and Star Alliance partners, so you will see connections through hubs like Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels when space is open.
- Check united.com for the same dates. United’s prices are dynamic, so compare.
- Check Air France or KLM for Flying Blue prices, and Virgin Atlantic’s site for Air France rewards.
- For Avios, search Aer Lingus for Washington to Dublin and Dublin to Berlin.
- Transfer only after you see space you can book. Bilt says transfers are usually immediate but to “allow up to 48 hours.”
Tip
If your points are in Bilt, watch for transfer bonuses on Rent Day. Our Bilt Rent Day guide explains how they work, and the Bilt Rewards guide covers the full partner list.
Watch Out
“starting at” prices on Air Canada and United flights can rise on busy dates. Check that the price on screen matches the chart before you transfer.
Bottom Line
There is no nonstop from DC to Berlin right now, so pick a one-stop award. Aeroplan at 42,500 points in economy or 75,000 in business is the best default for most people, and Chase, Amex, Capital One, and Bilt all transfer to it at 1:1.
FAQ
Does United fly nonstop from Dulles to Berlin?
Not in 2026. United launched the route as a seasonal flight in 2023, but Berlin Airport’s summer 2026 schedule lists only United’s Newark flight. Check united.com for future summers.
Which points are best for Berlin?
Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt are the most flexible here, since both reach Aeroplan, United, Virgin Atlantic, Flying Blue, and Aer Lingus. If you are just starting, see why we suggest starting with Chase.
Can I fly from Reagan National (DCA)?
Yes, with a connection. DCA has no flights to Europe, so book a routing through Newark, Montreal in summer, or another hub.
How many points do I need for business class to Berlin?
On Aeroplan, 75,000 points one way on most Star Alliance partners. On Virgin Atlantic, 48,500 off-peak on Air France plus surcharges. Turkish charges 90,000 miles.
Do I have to pay fuel surcharges?
It depends on the program. Aeroplan charges taxes plus a CA$39 partner fee. Flying Blue, Miles & More, and Virgin Atlantic all say surcharges are added, and BA adds carrier charges on its own flights.
