people who pay in full every month and want points or miles for flights and hotels
“Best travel credit card” is not one card. The right pick depends on whether you are under Chase’s reported card-count guideline, whether you will use lounge access and big credits, and whether you want flexible points or a simple miles program.
This hub picks one primary card per traveler type, using public offers we checked on the issuers’ own pages on October 14, 2026. For the full bonus table and eligibility wording, see Best Credit Card Welcome Bonuses Right Now. For a deep dive on the default starter, see our Chase Sapphire Preferred review.
Watch Out
Public offers change. Targeted mailers, in-branch offers, and login offers can be higher or lower. Amex often shows “as high as” amounts and reveals your exact offer after you apply. Check the issuer page on the day you apply.

How we pick
- Public, verifiable offer. Linked to the issuer’s own card page or offer terms.
- Fit for a real traveler type, not a one-size ranking.
- Fee vs. usable value. A $795 card is not “best” if you will not use the credits.
- Eligibility you can check. We quote the issuer’s own wording when it matters.
We do not rank by commission. Apply links go to the issuer’s public page.
Best first travel card: Chase Sapphire Preferred
Pick this if: you are new to points, pay your balance in full, spend on dining, gas, and travel, and you are under the widely reported Chase “5/24” guideline (five or more personal cards opened in 24 months often means a denial; Chase does not publish that number, but its pages say it may consider cards you have opened and closed).
Chase still transfers to United, Southwest, Aeroplan, and other partners at 1:1. World of Hyatt is 4:3 (1,000 Chase points become 750 Hyatt points). Accounts that kept 1:1 Hyatt through September 30, 2026 are now on 4:3 like everyone else. Full breakdown: Chase Sapphire Preferred review and Why start with Chase.
Tip
If you might want several Chase cards, apply for Chase first while you are under 5/24. Other banks’ applications do not help that count.
Best premium card (only if you use the credits): Chase Sapphire Reserve
Pick this if: you already know you will use a large annual travel credit, lounges, and other lifestyle credits. Skip it if: you are choosing your first card, or you will not use most of the fee offsets.

The bonus alone does not carry the fee. Count only credits that replace money you would spend anyway.
Best mid-fee premium miles card: Capital One Venture X
Pick this if: you want lounge access, a simpler miles currency, and a fee between Preferred and Reserve.

Capital One Venture X
Source: Capital One Venture X page and our Oct 14, 2026 offer check. Capital One says existing or previous cardmembers are not eligible if they received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past 48 months.
Miles transfer to 15+ travel loyalty programs once the transfer is final; Capital One notes receiving-program terms then apply.
Best simple low-fee miles card: Capital One Venture
Pick this if: you want 2x-style earning without learning transfer partners on day one, and you will use a Capital One Travel stays credit.

Capital One Venture

Best dining and grocery earner: Amex Gold Card
Pick this if: restaurants and U.S. supermarkets are a big share of your spend, and you will use Amex’s statement credits.

Amex Gold Card
Source: Amex card page and offer terms, checked Oct 14, 2026. You may not be eligible if you have or have had this Card, Premier Rewards Gold, Platinum, Schwab or Morgan Stanley Platinum, or previous versions. Gold’s terms list Platinum in the family, so if you want both, the wording allows Gold first.
Best high-fee premium (credit-heavy): Amex Platinum Card
Pick this if: you will actually use lounge access and the long list of credits. Skip it as a first card.

Best for rent and housing: Bilt Rewards
Pick this if: you pay rent or a mortgage and want points on that spend. Start with our Bilt Rewards guide and Bilt Rent Day explained before you transfer anything.
The Bilt Palladium public offer we checked Oct 14, 2026 is 50,000 points and Bilt Gold status after $4,000 in purchases (excluding rent or mortgage) in the first 90 days, plus $300 of Bilt Cash, for a $495 annual fee. Apply path: Bilt cards. Many people are better served by a lower-fee Bilt card first; match the card to credits you will use.
Best business travel card: Chase Ink Business Preferred
Pick this if: you have a real business (including a sole proprietorship), with shipping, ads, internet, phone, or travel spend.

Chase Ink Business Preferred

Best hotel-loyal pick right now: Hilton Honors Amex Surpass
Pick this if: you already stay at Hilton and want a low-spend bonus before the current offer ends.

Cards we left off the “primary pick” list (and why)
- Citi Strata Premier ($95, 60,000 after $4,000): strong 3x categories and ThankYou transfers, including American Airlines on premium ThankYou cards. Excellent second or third card; we still start most beginners on Chase for 5/24 timing. Bonus is blocked if you currently have or previously had Strata Premier or Citi Premier.
- Bank of America Premium Rewards / Wells Fargo Autograph Journey: fine simple $95 cards; see the welcome bonuses page. For a BofA stack with a shopping portal, see Bank of America Premium Rewards + Rakuten.
- Airline cobrands (United Explorer, etc.): great when you are loyal to one airline; weaker as a first flexible-points card.
How to choose in one minute
- Under 5/24 and new? Chase Sapphire Preferred.
- Have a business with category spend? Ink Business Preferred (often before or beside Preferred, depending on your plan).
- Want simple miles and lounges without Chase? Venture X.
- Want simple miles at $95? Venture (while the stays credit is attached).
- Pay rent? Read the Bilt guides before you open anything else for housing.
- Already over 5/24? Skip new Chase personal cards for now; look at Capital One, Citi, Amex, and Bilt using the welcome bonuses rules.
Watch Out
Never carry a balance to earn a bonus. Interest wipes out the points.
What is the best travel credit card overall in 2026?
For most people starting out under Chase’s reported card-count guideline, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is still the best first travel card: $95 fee, 75,000-point public offer, flexible transfers, and strong trip protections. Premium cards only win if you use their credits.
What is the best travel credit card with no annual fee?
On our current public list, the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect (20,000 points after $1,000 in 90 days) is the clean no-fee bonus. Many travelers prefer a $95 card with a larger bonus instead. See the welcome bonuses table.
Should I get the Sapphire Preferred or Venture X?
Preferred if you want Chase partners and you are protecting 5/24. Venture X if you want Capital One lounges and flat 2x earning and you are fine outside Chase. We compare them briefly in the Sapphire Preferred review.
Do I need more than one travel card?
Eventually, often yes: one flexible transfer card, one no-fee everyday earner, maybe a cobrand. Start with one bonus you can finish with normal spending.
